Parking Rates

Effective May 1, 2023

Demand on the St. John鈥檚 campus for parking spaces has continued to grow, while the fee charged for parking does not encourage members of the university community to avail of alternative, more environmentally friendly forms of transportation.

At the July 6, 2017 meeting of the Board of Regents, the Board approved two principles related to parking. First, the university administration should take steps to address the heavily subsidized parking rates currently charged to faculty, staff and students. Second, the university administration should stop constructing new parking spaces on campus (surface and garage) 鈥 until at least such a time as parking provisions adhere to a cost recovery model and/or alternative public transportation modes are put into effect.

In alignment with these principles, The Board of Regents approved a permit rate increase for faculty, staff and students a effective May 1, 2023 as well as a pay per use hourly rate increase for all pay per use areas on the St. John鈥檚 and Signal Hill campuses effective May 1, 2023. The new rate will be $1.75/hour. These rates still do not recover all costs associated with space maintenance, but are a step toward a cost recovery model. These new rates apply to 2023/2024 permits.

Parking at the Signal Hill Campus

Employee and Student (residence) permits for the Signal Hill Campus must be approved by the Signal Hill Campus Business Office prior to sale. Requests for a permit can be made through the individuals department/unit to this office.

All visitors to the Signal Hill location that require parking can use Pay Per Use parking, available via the Passport parking application. The St. John's Campus Parking Office does not issue temporary permits for this location.

Departmental permits will honored in the passport application spaces. However, staff and student permits are only permitted in designated permit areas.

As per the University Parking Regulations, parking provisions at the Signal Hill Campus are in effect 24/7.

Reminder to All Permit Holders: Permits are Not Valid in Pay-Per-Use Parking Spaces

Student, employee, visitor and departmental permit holders are reminded that permits are not valid in Pay-Per-Use (metered, Pay & Display, and Passport Canada) parking spaces. Drivers parked in a Pay-Per-Use parking space who have not paid through the applicable channel will be ticketed.

As parking is limited on St. John鈥檚 Campus, the Parking Office encourages all vehicle owners to consider alternative methods to transportation to Campus such as public transit or carpooling.
